Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth & Future First Responders
Objective Statement
To establish a Coalition dedicated to LGBTQ+ representation, serving as role models for youth and teens, while focusing on future career recruitment, community engagement and outreach, and fostering a positive impact.
Key Elements
1. LGBTQ+ Representation: Ensure that the first responder agency reflects and celebrates the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community, serving as visible role models for youth and teens navigating their identities.
2. Youth and Teen Focus: Prioritize outreach and support programs tailored to the specific needs and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth and teens, offering mentorship, guidance, and resources.
3. Career Recruitment: Actively recruit and mentor LGBTQ+ individuals interested in pursuing careers in emergency services, providing pathways for professional development and advancement.
4. Community Engagement and Outreach: Engage with local LGBTQ+ communities through outreach events, educational initiatives, and collaborative partnerships to build trust, understanding, and support.
5. Positive Impact: Measure and track the Coalition's impact on the well-being and empowerment of LGBTQ+ youth and teens, as well as the broader community, through qualitative and quantitative assessments.
Implementation Plan
1. Establish a task force comprising LGBTQ+ individuals and allies within the Coalition to oversee the development and implementation of LGBTQ+-inclusive policies and programs.
2. Design and launch targeted recruitment campaigns aimed at attracting LGBTQ+ candidates to careers in emergency services, highlighting the Coalition's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
3. Develop and implement training programs for current first responders within the Coalition to enhance cultural competency and sensitivity in working with LGBTQ+ youth and teens.
- Create specific and tailored training for those in school assigned roles such as a School Resource Officer (SRO), School Resource Deputy (SRD), and Armed Safe School Officer
4. Forge partnerships with local schools, youth organizations, and LGBTQ+ community centers to facilitate outreach efforts, workshops, and support groups for LGBTQ+ youth.
- Research and reach out to LGBTQ+ clubs on (middle/high) school campuses such as Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA)
5. Utilize social media platforms and digital channels to amplify the Coalition's visibility and reach, sharing success stories, resources, and opportunities for engagement with the broader community.
6. Establish metrics to measure the effectiveness of outreach programs, career recruitment initiatives, and community partnerships, regularly evaluating progress and adjusting strategies as needed to maximize impact.
